ENNIS, Tex. (October 14, 2017) – Hot Wheels™ Car Care Products Chevrolet Camaro driver Shane Tucker qualified No. 16 this weekend at the 32nd annual AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals at his adopted-home track, Texas Motorplex.
On Friday, Tucker started the foundation of his qualifying with a 6.784-second pass at 203.22 mph. The Rob Tucker-led team came back in the evening session and improved their performance by over five-thousandths of a second when he crossed the finish line with a 6.730, 204.35.
Saturday, the Australia-native clocked in with a consistent 6.768, 202.94 but was the victim of engine trouble that caused a motor replacement. Replacing the engine between the third and fourth session, Tucker made the call to not run the last qualifying session even though they were on the bump spot.
“We just didn’t get the motor put in with enough time,” Tucker said. “We hurt some parts in the third session and I just didn’t want to rush the thing. It was a big risk not running the final session because we could’ve been bumped out but we took that chance and I think it was a smart choice.”
Tucker qualified No. 16 and will race Bo Butner in the first round of eliminations tomorrow. With raceday temperatures forecasted to drop more than 20 degrees from qualifying, Tucker hopes he can capitalize on the conditions and pull an upset in the opening round.
“You have to throw out all the data and information you’ve gained during qualifying because the weather is going to be drastically cooler,” he admitted. “It’s going to throw everyone a curveball tomorrow but I guess everyone is racing the same track and the same conditions. I just have to go up there and do my job and make him earn it.”
