Team Liberty Racing Qualifying Report: Brainerd NHRA Nationals

BRAINERD, Minn. (August 19, 2017) – It has been a very trying weekend for the Team Liberty Racing duo of Cory Reed and Angelle Sampey at the 36th annual NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway but their faith in their team’s performance has never wavered through the challenges.

On Friday, Cory Reed experienced engine trouble when his PSE/Team Liberty Racing Victory Magnum shut off before the finish line and he coasted to a 9.215-second pass at 94.07 mph. Angelle Sampey followed the next pair and succumbed to shifting issues and clocked in with a 7.492, 167.68 mph. Realizing they hurt both of their engines in the first session, Team Liberty Racing collectively decided to sit out the second session to devote their time to putting in new power plants and taking the time to not rush the process.

On Saturday, Sampey jumped up to the No. 7 seed when she ran a quick 6.959, 191.78 and Reed followed in the other lane with a solid 6.978, 187.18. In the final qualifying session, Reed crossed the finish line at the Brainerd, Minn.-based track with a consistent 6.986, 186.36; Sampey slowed to a 7.003, 185.61 in the heat of the day.

Reed landed in the No. 13 spot and will race Scotty Pollacheck in the first round and No. 9 Sampey will take on Andrew Hines.

“That’ll be a good race,” Reed said about his first round matchup against Pollacheck. “We’ve had a tough weekend out here but maybe those motors broke yesterday so we could have some fast ones in for the rest of the weekend. We’re slowly but surely closing the gap. The round wins are coming for our bikes; it’s just a matter of time.”

“We’re still a team and we’re still motivated,” Sampey said with confidence. “We’re more of a team than any team I’ve been on and that’s why I get so emotional about this. These guys deserve this so much and I can’t wait to win a round, win a race, and win a yellow hat; they deserve it so much.”
