Competition Eliminator Race Recap: David Rampy’s Journey to the Route 66 Nationals Win

July 12, 2017

JOLIET, Ill. (July 11, 2017) – David Rampy took top honors when he won five rounds of competition in Competition Eliminator at the 20th annual Children of Fallen Patriots NHRA Route 66 Nationals presented by K&N inking his 95th national event career win.

In the first round, Bruno Massel came in as the No. 1 seed in his DD/AT 2010 Cobalt and used his top qualifying position to defeat Wabash, In.-based Robert Bailey in the first round. David Rampy took his 1932 Bantum to the win over Ray Skillman in the first round who went .147-seconds red at the launch. Other winners in the first round were Travis Gusso, Jenny Treadwell, Brian Stufflebeam, Brian Hyerstay, Troy Galbraith, Doug Doll Jr., Brandon Baxter, and Keith Hall.

Second round, Keith Hall had a competition bye after Treadwell was a no show to her second round of competition after an unfortunate top-end collision. Rampy had a .029-second reaction time in his pairing against No. 1 qualifier Massel and used that advantage to take the win; he clocked in with a 7.294 on his 7.86 index. Other second round winners were Baxter, Stufflebeam, and Hyerstay.

In the quarterfinals, Rampy was unopposed and coasted to the finish line in hopes of not hurting his index on his bye run. Hall defeated Stufflebeam and Hyerstay was victorious over Baxter in the third round.

Division 6 Brian Hyerstay turned on the win light in the semifinal round when he took the green light on his bye run. Rampy punched his ticket to his 151st final round of his impressive career in the semifinals when he deafeated Hall who went .015-seconds red.

In the finals, Hyerstay turned on the win light in Rampy’s lane automatically when he was .040-seconds red at the hit but Rampy was no slouch in the other lane going .009 on the tree right next to him. Rampy ran it out to the 1,000-foot mark and coasted to his 95th national event victory.
