DENSO Spark Plug NHRA Nationals Competition Eliminator Race Recap
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (April 3, 2017) – For the third time this season, the NHRA Competition Eliminator racers competed for top honors at the 18th annual DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In the first round, Alan Ellis in A/AA came into raceday as the No. 1 seed. During first round eliminations, Ellis took out Ralph Van Paepeghem when Van Paepeghem turned on the red light. Scott McClay took out Clint Sallee when Sallee broke before staging. Other winners in the first round were Ross Wilson, Doug Lambeck, Tony Mandella, Keith Mawhee, and Dan Fletcher. Second round, Scott McClay took out Doug Lambeck when he ran .522-seconds under his C/ED index. Tony Mandella took out Ross Wilson and Dan Fletcher was victorious over Keith Mawhee. Other winners in the second round included Alan Ellis with a bye-run victory. In the semifinal round, Alan Ellis was victorious once again as he advanced over Scott McClay and Tony Mandella took out veteran racer Dan Fletcher that is on his quest for 100 national event wins. In the finals, both Mandella and Ellis were almost identical at the launch. Ellis was .004-seconds on the tree and Mandella wasn’t far behind with a .008. The pair battled it all the way down the 1320 and Ellis took the win running .605-seconds under his A/AA index. Mandella clocked in with an 8.490, 155.45 and was .560-seconds under his index. Ellis’ wire-to-wire win was his sixth national event win in Competition Eliminator.
