POMONA, Calif. (November 12, 2016) – A&J Furniture Manufacturing Pro Stock driver Aaron Strong had ups and downs during qualifying at the 52nd annual Auto Club NHRA Finals but by the end of the fourth qualifying session, he was able to get his Chevrolet Camaro into the field in the No. 14 spot.
Strong has been fighting unknown gremlins the last three events but he flew out early this weekend in hopes of finding out what was wrong with the car. On Friday, Strong had big tire shake and he coasted to the finish line with a 13.641-second pass at 64.67 mph. Adjusting the tune-up and putting the power to the track, Strong came back with a 6.642, 208.20 and qualified him in the provisional No. 11 spot.
On Saturday, Strong improved his qualifying spot when he clocked in with a 6.626, 209.01. He finished qualifying with a 19.732, 43.09 when he shook the tires immediately and was forced to push in the clutch and coast to the finish line.
“This morning, we picked up a couple of hundredths in that right lane,” Strong said. “We came back in the final session and it shook the tires; we’re pretty optimist that we have a 59 in it if it hooks.”
No. 14 Strong will race No. 3 Greg Anderson in the first round of eliminations.
“We figured out what was wrong with the car but I do think we underachieved during qualifying,” Strong added. “We didn’t qualify where we wanted but we do have some left in it for Greg tomorrow.”
