MADISON, Ill. (September 24, 2016) – Precision Service Equipment/Star Racing Buell teammates Angelle Sampey and Cory Reed both qualified in the top half at Gateway Motorsports Park this weekend; Sampey ended up No. 2 and Reed finished No. 8.
In the first session on Friday, Reed clocked in with a 6.951-second pass at 194.13 mph. Sampey followed shortly after with a 6.893, 195.87. The PSE/Star Racing team reappeared for Friday’s night session with Reed making a big move up the qualifying order with a 6.915, 190.83 and Sampey clocking in with a consistent 6.903, 193.40.
On Saturday, blistering track temperatures would normally threaten teams in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle class but not Star Racing. Sampey collected three bonus points in the third session when she went low of the round with a 6.851, 195.00; Reed clocked in with an improved 6.910, 192.22. The duo closed out qualifying at Gateway Motorsports Park with their best runs of the weekend when Reed ran 6.884, 193.74 and Sampey ran 6.831, 197.02; Sampey grabbed two more bonus points for her final round of qualifying.
After four rounds of qualifying, Reed will have lane choice over LE Tonglet in the first round and Sampey will have lane choice over Angie Smith.
“It seems like I’ve raced LE a lot this season,” Reed said about competitor Tonglet who he’s raced twice already in 2016. “We’ll take whatever lane our team thinks is best. I just want to cut a good light and turn on the win light.”
“It’s exciting to be No. 1 and I’m kind of wishing we were hogging up another green hat this weekend but I’m still very excited about being No. 2,” Sampey said. “Being No. 2 is the next best thing to me. My crew chief Ken Johnson says being No. 1 is a curse so maybe we can get another yellow win hat tomorrow from the No. 2 spot.”
