BRAINERD, Minn. (August 20, 2016) – Precision Service Equipment/Star Racing Buell rider Angelle Sampey was able to hold off the rest of the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle class and take top honors after four rounds of qualifying at the 35th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. This No. 1 qualifier will be the three-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcyle World Champion’s 47th pole position of her career.
For Friday’s first session, Sampey ran a 6.956-second pass at 192.25 mph. She followed up with a 6.848, 194.94 which shot her to the provisional No. 1 qualifier at the end of Friday; she collected three bonus points for that run.
Knowing she officially had a target on her back, Sampey wanted to make sure she kept the No. 1 spot from the rest of the competition. After having to steer her Buell back into the groove on Saturday’s first pass, it resulted in a slowed 6.928, 193.57. She closed out qualifying with a massive 6.830, 196.64. She remained in the No. 1 and nabbed three more bonus points to her tally.
“We actually weren’t able to make a tuning call on the last run,” admitted Sampey. “When I did the third round of qualifying, the bike took off and went to the right and I had to hang off the left side of it the entire way down the racetrack so we didn’t get to see what it was going to do. Before Q4, the wire that goes from the computer to the motorcycle broke and we weren’t able to change the mapping so we had to run with the exact same tune-up as Q3 but fortunately, we went faster because I went straight down the track.”
From the top spot, Sampey will have a first round matchup against No. 16 Angie Smith in the first round of eliminations tomorrow morning.
“I’m so proud of my guys,” she beamed. “They work so hard. I know everyone comes up here and says that but my team specifically, I don’t know anybody in my life outside that works as hard as they do. They provide me with the motorcycle and I get all the glory so I have to give a shout out to all the people on my team and the guys back at the shop that make my PSE/Star Racing Buell fast.”
Tomorrow's eliminations are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. (CST) starting with Top Fuel.
