QUALIFYING REPORT: 36TH ANNUAL SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT NHRA SOUTHERN NATIONALS
Rookie Cory Reed Qualifies in First Race of Career at NHRA Southern Nationals
COMMERCE, Ga. (May 14, 2016) – Cory Reed is no stranger to being behind the handlebars of a motorcycle. As a former professional motocross racer, Reed knew it was just a matter of time before he would qualify for the uber-competitive NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle class on his Precision Service Equipment/Star Racing Buell. Reed enters raceday at the 36th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in the No. 14 spot.
Since the NHRA Four-Wide event in Charlotte, North Carolina, the PSE/Star Racing team made the decision to change body styles on Reed’s motorcycle from an EBR to a Buell. Hoping the change would bring faster elapsed times for Reed, they entered qualifying at Atlanta Dragway with an open mind.
“The new bike body is pretty different than my old one,” Reed explained. “The old bike was skinny where I sat and bigger up front. This new Buell body is kind of the opposite; it’s bigger in the back. The bike just responds differently but one thing I like is that I’m able to get really low on this bike which is better.”
On Friday’s first qualifying run, Reed clocked in with a 6.952-second pass at 190.38 mph. Reed came back to finish Friday’s qualifying with a 6.978, 188.44 and ended up No. 11 at the end of the day.
Reed clocked in with a 6.997, 186.74 in the first qualifying session on Saturday in 125-degree track temperatures. Reed closed out his qualifying efforts with a 7.017, 185.72, landing him in the No. 14 spot with a first round matchup against Chip Ellis.
“I wasn’t nervous about not qualifying,” he said. “I was more nervous about the bike running because we thrashed last minute before Q4 but we made the run. Regardless, it definitely feels good to be qualified and racing for the first time in Pro Stock Motorcycle.”
