QUALIFYING REPORT: 36TH ANNUAL SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT NHRA SOUTHERN NATIONALS
Angelle Sampey Rockets to the Top Spot at the NHRA Southern Nationals
COMMERCE, Ga. (May 14, 2016) – Angelle Sampey rode her PSE/Star Racing Buell to the No. 1 spot after four rounds of qualifying at the 36th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals. Sampey also racked up nine bonus points to her name to boost her confidence going into raceday.
On Friday’s first session, Sampey clocked in with a 6.943-second pass at 190.81 mph. Friday’s night session produced a 6.856, 193.32 which launched Sampey to the top spot as the provisional No. 1 qualifier.
Returning on Saturday afternoon with a morale boost, Sampey gained more attention when she ran an impressive 6.881, 191.48 with track temperate reaching nearly 130 degrees. For Saturday’s final qualifying, Sampey went through the lights at 6.876, 192.96.
Sampey got the maximum amount of bonus points the last three qualifying sessions, adding nine points to her tally.
“It feels like this No. 1 is the first one I’ve ever had,” smiled Sampey. “I’m very excited. We were contemplating not making that last run and we waited all the way up until the Harley team went down the track. George [Bryce] came to me and said ‘you need the practice’ and ‘let’s make the run'. I didn’t think we were gonna do well with the big headwind but we made a good run.”
The No. 1 seed will give Sampey lane choice over No. 16 Steve Johnson in the first round of eliminations tomorrow.
“I started this 20 years ago and it’s not as easy as it used to be,” she admitted. “When I say we’re working hard, I mean it. My team is working hard; I’m working hard. To get this green hat is just the beginning of what we’ve got for the competition for the rest of the season.”
“I hope I can keep my focus tomorrow and drive the way I need to drive it and God blesses me with pretty green lights and we’ll go all the way to the winner circle.”
