Angelle Sampey Locks in Provisional No.1 Spot on Friday Qualifying at NHRA Southern Nationals
COMMERCE, Ga. (May 13, 2016) – Angelle Sampey rocketed her Precision Service Equipment/Star Racing Buell to the No. 1 spot on Friday evening at the 36th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals.
In Friday’s first session, Sampey clocked in with a 6.943-second pass at 190.81 mph putting her in the No. 5 spot. Sampey returned for Friday’s night session and turned heads when she crossed the finish line with an impressive 6.865, 193.32. Her pass was so stout that she took the No. 1 spot by more than 0.03-seconds over the No. 2 rider Andrew Hines and added three bonus points to her tally.
“To be able to go No. 1 on Friday at Star Racing’s home track is really exciting,” said Sampey. “I want this so badly for my team. All the guys back at the shop that are in the shadows and don’t come out to the track and get the glory are gonna be here this weekend. I want to go No. 1 so badly for them.”
Three-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Champion Sampey has held the No. 1 seed going into raceday six times at Atlanta Dragway.
“It’s so exciting to get the No. 1 spot even if it’s just Friday,” she said. “The whole team has been working so hard. I know everyone says they work really hard but we really are.”
Her final pass on Friday helped boost the confidence of Sampey and her entire team.
“Racing is a mental game,” she admitted. “If you go up there thinking you can conquer the world, it’s so much easier to perform. This is the motivation and the boost we all needed.”
