Star Racing Qualifying Report: Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals

March 19, 2016

Gainesville, Florida (March 19, 2016) – The Precision Service Equipment (PSE)/Star Racing team had a bittersweet result from qualifying at the 47th annual AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals. Three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle Champion Angelle Sampey qualified No. 5 but her teammate and rookie Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Cory Reed missed the field by a very close .012-thousandths of a second.
On Friday’s first session, Reed set the tone with a quick 6.933-second pass at 191.40 mph. Sampey clocked in with a 8.629, 98.03 after having engine trouble.
“The bike decided to eat the piston and put it through the exhaust pipe that first run,” said Sampey. “It literally threw me into the windshield because it wanted to stop instantly when it ate the piston. We were on a good run with what the numbers were showing.”
In Friday’s evening session, Sampey made an impressive run with a 6.854, 192.44 putting her in the No. 4 spot after two rounds of qualifying. Reed experienced massive tire shake in the second run and received no time.
Saturday’s questionable weather subsided by the afternoon to allow StarRacing’s riders to finish up qualifying. On Saturday’s first run, Reed ran a consistent 9.950, 190.30. Sampey was shut off before she made her run due to an oil leak coming from the bottom of her bike. In final qualifying, Sampey was ready to improve on her position on the ladder and clocked in with a 6.847, 195.70. Reed rode right down the middle of the groove but his 9.970, 190.92 was not enough to improve and allow him to make the very competitive NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle field come Sunday.
Sampey ended up No. 5 and will have lane choice over Jim Underdahl in the first round of eliminations on Sunday morning.
“I’ve raced Jimmy a few times,” said Sampey. “That is a good family; I’ve even raced his dad too. I’m excited to be racing them because they are such good people. I can’t cut him any slack, though, he’ll cut a light and make a good run.”
