HARLOW SAMMONS CHEVROLET CAMARO
RACE REPORT: 32ND ANNUAL CARQUEST AUTO PARKS NHRA NATIONALS
WILD HORSE PASS MOTORSPORTS PARK
FEBRUARY 26-28, 2016
CHANDLER, Arizona (February 28, 2016) – Chris McGaha and his Harlow Sammons Pro Stock Chevrolet Camaro reached their first final round of the 2016 season as a result of impressive driving and finessed tune-ups at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals.
McGaha began raceday in the No. 5 position and had lane choice over Joey Grose. Grose turned on the red light at the hit and McGaha took the win with a 6.634-second pass at 209.14 mph, his fastest pass of the weekend thus far. For second round, McGaha had lane choice over Deric Kramer. With track temperatures rising before the second round, McGaha adjusted the setup and clocked in with a 6.664, 208.78 and took the win over Deric Kramer who experienced tire shake at the hit of the throttle.
Heading into the semifinal round, McGaha found himself in a matchup against this weekend’s No. 1 qualifier Bo Butner. McGaha launched off the starting line with a .020-thousandths of a second reaction time that gave him a sizeable advantage over Bo Butner’s .082-thousandts reaction time. McGaha clocked in with a 6.692, 208.07 and got the holeshot win over Butner’s 6.690, 208.10.
In the final round, the Odessa,Texas-based driver advanced his tune-up in his Chevrolet Camaro and clocked in with a 6.671, 208.75 but it wasn’t enough to edge out Jason Line’s 6.666, 205.16.
The final round was a definite moral boost for the Harlow Sammons team after their early exit just two weeks prior at the Circle K NHRA Winternationals.
“It feels great,” proclaimed McGaha. “After a first round loss in Pomona to rebounding to the finals here - heck yeah. That’s great! Last year, we rebounded here and progressed from there so hopefully we can do the same thing this year.”
“I think we got a little spunk back in us. We just needed something to lift us up.”
The next race will be the 47th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals on March 17-20th, 2016 at Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Florida. Qualifying will begin on Friday, March 18th at 12:45 and 4:15 p.m.
